In general terms, you would also need to import the private key into ESXi or the vCenter appliance. You cannot just upload a certificate file to a random server and have it work. The private key is the other missing link.

On the machine where the wildcard currently is located, the same one that has the private key (and where you probably created a CSR file originally to start the process) you can export that certificate into PKCS #12 format (usually a *.pfx file). This kind of file includes the certificate AND the private key.

If you can import the pfx file into the remote host, you would have more luck.

Alternatively, you can just simply download vcenter's certificate into your computer's certificate store instead so they are trusted and avoid the browser warning.

On the landing page you will see a link in the bottom-right side of the page called 'Download trusted root CA certificates' (https://yourvcenter.domain.com/certs/download.zip)

Unzip the zip file which will contain some certificates and possibly certificate revocation list files as well.

Open the certs to find out which one is issued to 'CA' and which one is issued to 'vcenter.yourdomain.com'

The CA one is to be imported into your computer account's 'Trusted Root Certificates' store and the other one into your computer account's 'Personal' certificate store.

Once done and clear any SSL cache your browser may have, it should work next time you load it.
