Carried out August 15-21, 1971 in the basement of Jordan Hall, the Stanford Prison Experiment set out to examine the psychological effects of authority and powerlessness in a prison environment. The study, led by psychology professor Philip G. Zimbardo, recruited Stanford students using a local newspaper ad. The Stanford prison experiment was a study of the psychological effect of becoming a prisoner or prison guard. Lasting for only six days, from August 14 to 20, 1971, the experiment was conducted by a team of researchers at Stanford University led by the psychology professor Phillip Zimbardo. The Stanford Prison Experiment remains to be a reference for how environment and situations impact the behavior of human beings. It has also made researches pay closer attention to how they select their participants (i.e. Demographic representation, age, wording used in recruitment) and what information they provide them.
